Even at Disney·Pixar, life can get overwhelming. ”There are a lot of days I just want to crawl under my desk,” says director Docter (Monsters, Inc.), who was evidently in a similarly misanthropic mood when he met with Finding Nemo screenwriter Bob Peterson to dream up their next film. ”We drew this idea of a house floating away tied to balloons,” says Docter. ”It felt very peaceful. We also thought about old men. [An old man] has earned the ability to gripe at people.” From these discussions emerged Up, the story of a widowed former balloon salesman (Asner) who rigs his home to fly off for a long-deferred trip to South America. But can an animated film about a cranky senior citizen manage to charm toy-happy kids? Though Pixar’s enviable streak of nine straight hit features is on the line, Docter insists he’s not worried. ”At one point or another [in the filmmaking process], almost every one of those films was lousy,” he says. ”It’s like childbirth: You’re screaming in pain, but once the kid’s born, you’re like, ‘Let’s have another one!’ ”
