There’s certainly nothing wrong with a young singer-songwriter choosing to imitate Carole King, and Diane Birch’s debut album is a cornucopia of spot-on Kingisms, from the first smoky vocal inflection to the last rolling piano lick. Unfortunately, this itinerant-preacher’s daughter doesn’t yet have anything resembling King’s ability to craft a hook. Without that key ingredient, Bible Belt can’t help but fall short. A perfectly pleasant piece of background music for your next warm-weather brunch, it’s likely to be something of ? a snooze in just about any other context. B?
