Preliminaires

Genre: Pop; Lead Performer: Iggy Pop

Iggy sings ballads. In French. With clarinet solos. He also dabbles in Dixieland jazz, spoken word, and chilled electro-lounge music on his 15th solo album. If that sounds hideous, or hilarious, it’s actually a little bit of both. You know it’s a long way from ”I Wanna Be Your Dog” when the Ig solemnly asks, ”What is a dog but? a machine for loving?” Pop’s baritone howl is one of rock’s all-time greatest instruments, as he affirms on Préliminaires’ ”Nice to Be Dead.” But when he’s working in autumn-of-life reflective-crooner mode, he sounds like little more than a tourist in the wrong neighborhood.
