From Spirited Away to Howl’s Moving Castle, films by Japanese animation giant Hayao Miyazaki have won Oscar gold, critical reverence, and the outright worship of the ‘toon community — but never big box office returns in the U.S. Disney animation honcho John Lasseter, who’s exec-producing the English-language release of Miyazaki’s latest, insists that Ponyo ”is probably one of the most commercial films Miyazaki has made.” And to further lure new audiences, Lasseter reached into his Disney bag of tricks, casting Miley Cyrus’ little sister, Noah, as the titular fish who yearns to be a human girl, and the Jonas Brothers’ little bro, Frankie, as the boy who befriends her. In case you can’t tell, ”I really want America to discover Miyazaki’s films,” says Lasseter.
