Reality Killed the Video Star

Genre: Pop; Lead Performer: Robbie Williams

On his first release since 2006’s electro experiment Rudebox, Britpop’s cheekiest court jester has suddenly turned into Mr. Sincerity. The recently rehabbed singer-songwriter largely eschews his typical lyrical snarkiness and cleverly ironic covers, and replaces them with sober studies of sex, love, and fame. While Reality Killed the Video Star contains fewer knockout potential hits than past efforts, it does boast the two strongest soul-flecked tracks of Williams’ career: the affecting ”You Know Me” and the key-shifting ”Won’t Do That.” The guy simply sounds fantastic with a horn section.
