We gave it a B+

Less than a minute into this retrospective from Brooklyn’s Daptone Records, the wonderfully named Binky Griptite welcomes you to ”four solid sides of soul,” and that serves as an excellent indication of how out of step the label is with the MP3 era. (Do ones and zeros have sides?) The finest stuff on Daptone Gold is from Daptone’s flagship act, Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings; their 2000 debut single still kills. However, folks who first heard Jones this year on Michael Bublé’s Crazy Love should dig deep: Lee Fields’ ”Could Have Been” is a potent throwback thrill. B+
