''Telephone'': A truly awesome parody

This recent Lady Gaga-Beyoncé spoof is the funniest Internet meme of the moment

Twelve days after Lady Gaga and Beyoncé debuted their epic ”Telephone” music video, a hilarious spoof version hit the Internet. The clip — which has since racked up 1.8 million views — took the already-outsize original and blew it up: Two-liter Pepsi bottles in Gaga’s hair! An interlude celebrating product placement! So who was behind this amazing viral clip? Turns out it’s part of a Web series called Key of Awesome, which has produced 19 musical comedy clips over the past five months (see them all at barelydigital.com/awesome). ”In some ways it’s hard to do, but it also feels like shooting fish in a barrel,” says Mark Douglas, who writes the biting lyrics for the series (he and his team were also behind the ”Obama Girl” video). The Awesome take on Ke$ha’s ”Tik Tok,” which finds the tartlet barfing glitter, has also made the rounds, attracting more than 10.5 million viewings, and other successful spoofs have targeted Adam Lambert, Justin Bieber, and John Mayer. ”It’s fun to explore, Okay, why would Lady Gaga do this?” says Douglas. ”It’s all about finding a fun little crazy story with a kernel of truth.”
