We gave it a B

Oprah favorite Sue Miller (The Senator’s Wife) returns with a refracted rhombus of a novel, The Lake Shore Limited, relayed via four intertwined narratives. Leslie still mourns Gus, the brother she lost on 9/11; playwright Billy is the girlfriend Gus left behind. Rafe is an actor in the terrorism-themed play Billy writes to exorcise her feelings for Gus; Sam is an old friend of Leslie’s, and Billy’s possible suitor. For all that exposition — and for all the lean, lucid grace of Miller’s prose — Lake Shore is oddly muted, interested less? in action and revelations than in the quiet accumulation of moments. B
