Neil Marshall’s awesome 2006 subterranean chiller, The Descent, understood what makes a scary movie work: keeping its blood-thirsty man-eaters — or in this case, woman-eaters — in the shadows. Unfortunately, this lame and preposterous straight-to-DVD sequel ignores rule No. 1 and relies on overkill. In The Descent: Part 2, We see way too much of the film’s milky, bat-eared beasties as they rip apart a dim rescue team venturing underground to find the group of female weekend-warrior cave explorers from the first film. There’s plenty of gore if that’s what floats your boat, but what was terrifying in the original is tedious here. The EXTRAS aren’t any better: a snoozy commentary, some deleted scenes, and a making-of. C-
