Emmys: Should Jimmy Fallon host them?

Insiders tell the trade the Peacock has lobbied the TV Academy hard for Jimmy Fallon to get the gig – he appeals to a young audience, has a Twitter stream that he can use to promote the awards, and has already proven he can parody Lost and Glee (with Late and 6-Bee), not to mention Kate Gosselin.

Is Jimmy the best bet? Let’s see. Were Parks and Recreation’s Amy Poehler not due to deliver her second child days before the telecast, I’d argue for her to have the job: She always kills in award show bits, and even if a joke were to bomb, she’s so adorable it’d keep things from getting awkward. But I think gambling on the Emmys telecast is different than a Saturday Night Live Weekend Update. Perhaps if Date Night hadn’t hit theaters till this summer, I’d have been more enthusiastic about the idea of reteaming 30 Rock’s Tina Fey and The Office’s Steve Carell. Love them both, but the timing doesn’t feel quite right. I’d make a case for Joel McHale, whose time hosting The Soup more than qualifies him for an opening monologue critiquing the year in television, but Community isn’t a runaway hit.

Really, all things considered, I think Jimmy is the right man for the job. With an opening bit parodying Date Night in which Tina and Steve are mistaken as the hosts of the Emmys. And a Soup-style segment from Joel. And a remote report from Amy from the hospital or her newborn’s nursery.

Who’s your pick?
