That was the big news of the week in theater, as the musical revival of La Cage aux Folles and the new Africa-beat musical Fela! boasted the most nods, with 11 each. The revival of August Wilson’s Fences came in right behind that, with 10 nominations. Of course, there were several surprises and snubs when all was revealed. For instance, Broadway faves Bebe Neuwirth and Nathan Lane, currently starring in The Addams Family, didn’t get nods, but Tony nominators did recogize several other bold-faced names, including Jude Law, Denzel Washington, Scarlett Johansson, and Catherine Zeta-Jones.
Of course, however, the Tony nominations weren’t the only thing that happened in theater this week. Two Off Broadway shows opened in NYC. First was Family Week, a family drama written by Beth Henley and directed by fresh-to-the-stage movie director Jonathan Demme. In my review, I called Demme’s production of the rehab-set show “quick and powerful” and lauded it for “dripping with both drama and comedy” and gave it a B+. Meanwhile, Melissa Rose Bernardo wasn’t as pleased with comedy White’s Lies, starring Betty Buckley and Peter Scolari. In fact, she called it “outrageously bad” before slugging it with a C.
