An Australian filmmaker planning to import men and women to Nevada in order to film a “virginity auction” might be thwarted by U.S. federal law. The Las Vegas Sun quotes a lobbyist for Nevada’s brothels who says “bringing women across state lines” for prostitution would violate the Mann Act, threatening Melbourne documentarian Justin Sisely’s plans to film in-person “auctions” even though prostitution is legal is several rural Nevada counties. The newspaper also points out that the project could face advertising troubles, given that the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals this year upheld two Nevada laws that bar legal brothels from advertising by newspaper, leaflet, or billboard in Las Vegas, Reno, and other places where prostitution is illegal.
