This summer, a low-key lesbian couple (played by Annette Bening and Julianne Moore) are hoping to headline the season’s big indie sensation — and launch 2010’s Oscar race to boot. In The Kids Are All Right, the couple’s teenage kids (Mia Wasikowska and Josh Hutcherson) find the sperm donor (Mark Ruffalo) who fathered them both. The resulting family chaos had Sundance audiences shedding tears both happy and sad, and declaring Bening, Moore, Ruffalo, and co-writer-director Lisa Cholodenko (Laurel Canyon) serious Oscar contenders — in January. The buzz proved so strong, distributor Focus Features has slated the film for July 7. In a summer season filled with CGI sensations, these Kids could be all kinds of right — as perfect counterprogramming.
