Think of Shrek Forever After as a kind of reboot. Feeling far too domesticated, Shrek (voiced once more by Mike Myers) signs a magical contract to be a plain old ogre again for just one day, only to find himself plunged into an alternate Far Far Away universe in which he was never born. Donkey (Eddie Murphy) is a pack mule; Puss in Boots (Antonio Banderas) is an overweight house cat; and Fiona (Cameron Diaz) is an outlaw ogress.

The villain behind that contract is Rumpelstiltskin, whom director Mike Mitchell describes as ”a has-been, ambulance-chasing, strip-mall lawyer who can’t get a client.” Voicing the scoundrel is the head of DreamWorks Animation’s story department, Walt Dohrn, who landed the gig after studio honcho Jeffrey Katzenberg screened an early cut of the PG film with Dohrn’s voice as the temporary ”scratch” track. Dohrn still can’t quite believe the company he’s keeping: ”The joke was always, you know, Myers! Murphy! Diaz! Banderas! Dohrn?!”
