Who takes your best-dressed crown at Cannes this year?

cannes-blanchett-williams

cannes-blanchett-williamsThe films have played, the deals are done and right now in Cannes, they’re rolling up the red carpet to signal the end of France’s annual film festival. And like every year, we’ve seen a parade of red carpet gowns — some incredible, some not so much.

It being France and one of the world’s most prestigious movie events, it’s only natural for many actresses to go for big ball gowns with plenty of drama. As meticulous as the construction of these dresses might be, there’s something about them that’s become so stale to me. It’s not new, it’s not exciting and it makes everyone look like a clone.

But when Cate Blanchett walked the carpet in a bold, eagle-print Alexander McQueen gown (far left), that was a dress that got people talking. Whether you like it (like I do) or not, you can’t deny that it’s something different. But it’s not just its uniqueness that did it for me; it’s the fact that only someone like Blanchett could pull it off. It’s not easy to make prints looks good, but to make an emblazoned bald eagle look fit for a queen? That’s a skill.

In the case of Eva Longoria Parker’s gorgeous but ultimately ordinary Emilio Pucci gown, I could’ve seen that same number on anyone from Charlize Theron to fellow Cannes attendee Kate Beckinsale. Not everyone has the regal quality about her to wear that kind of dress. So Cate, you win but — you have to share this award with Michelle Williams (near left).

The Blue Valentine star hit up the amfAR gala in a sequined mini by French designer Sonia Rykiel. Mod, breezy, and oh so flattering, it was the type of dress that few could pull off, but Williams is one of them thanks in part to her flawless makeup and short ‘do, which, I might add, looked vastly improved from this.

But since talk of best always deserves a talk of what was the worst, my nomination goes to Elizabeth Banks in this atrocious Versace mess. The hair, the hoop earrings, the window blind-esque bottom half — where to begin?

What do you guys think of Blanchett and Williams’ looks? Do you give my crowned winners a thumbs up or down? Who else did you like from this year’s festival? And who else thinks Banks’ Versace dress should be burned and rid from our memories?
