We gave it a B

Out of print since its original issue in 1986, the debut by Minnesota’s Jayhawks (now on CD for the first time) captures the roots rockers before they developed the arty streak that would define later efforts. On The Jayhawks they’re basically a Gram Parsons tribute act — think lyrics about falling stars and plenty of winsome pedal steel. The songs sometimes bland out, but Mark Olson and Gary Louris’ vocal harmonies still shine. B
