STARRING Josh Brolin, Megan Fox, and John Malkovich
WRITTEN BY Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor
DIRECTED BY Jimmy Hayward Based on DC’s dark comic, Jonah Hex is both a Wild West action movie and a from-the-grave revenge flick. Josh Brolin stars as a hideously scarred, hard-living bounty hunter who goes head-to-head with a crazy terrorist (John Malkovich) in the wake of the Civil War. ”It’s one thing doing Superman or Batman, where you have a built-in audience,” says Brolin, who admits that he knew nothing of the comic before signing on. ”But this is more risky. He’s this great antihero that goes back to spaghetti Westerns and Clint Eastwood. Part of it is a little campy and part of it is very real.”
Hex’s journey to the screen hasn’t exactly been smooth. Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor, who co-wrote the script, initially planned to codirect but dropped out over creative differences. The job went to Jimmy Hayward (Horton Hears a Who!) — and then Francis Lawrence (I Am Legend) was called in as a consultant for 12 days of reshoots earlier this year. ”It really enhanced the movie a lot,” says Brolin, who says he’s thrilled with the finished product. His only grievance: getting back in the makeup chair. ”There was three hours of prosthetics every morning,” he says. Let’s see Superman do that.
