The Island

Genre: Fiction; Author: Elin Hilderbrand; Publisher: Reagan Arthur Books

The signposts of Elin Hilderbrand’s wildly successful genre fiction are all here in The Island, from her protagonists (WASPy, wine-loving beauties all) to the setting (always New England, always summer) to the book’s cover (yet another iteration of sandy, slim-ankled limbs). But as escapist beach reads go, her latest is consistently smarter and more compelling than it needs to be. This tale of a middle-aged divorcée’s monthlong sojourn on tiny, rustic Tuckernut Island with her art-world sister and two troubled daughters zips along with the kind of well-limned romantic drama that keeps poolside readers out of the water for hours.
