Twentieth Century Fox and director Ridley Scott have tapped Star Trek producer and Lost co-creator Damon Lindelof to pen a script that could form the basis for an Alien prequel movie or for something else altogether, EW has confirmed. The news was first reported by Mike Fleming of Deadline Hollywood. According to a source familiar with the deal, Lindelof was approached to rewrite an existing Alien prequel script by Jon Spaihts. The Lost producer pitched a take on the Alien project that actually differed from Scott’s plans, but the director and studio liked it enough to commission him to write a script. Should Scott decide not to use Lindelof’s work for the Alien flick, Fox may make the movie, anyway, as an original sci-fi property separate from the Alien franchise.
