Amelia Earheart, Brandon Teena, suffragette Alice Paul, freedom writer Erin Gruwell: Hilary Swank has a knack for bringing real people to the screen. ”It’s definitely a coincidence, but I have noticed it,” says the two-time Oscar winner. ”I find that when the true stories come across my desk, they tend to be more compelling than the fiction that I get.” In Conviction, Swank plays another true-life figure, Betty Anne Waters, a Massachusetts single mother who spent nearly 10 years battling to free her brother (played by Sam Rockwell) after he was wrongfully convicted of murder. ”Amelia’s long gone, and Alice Paul’s passed away, but Betty Anne, she’s still living on this planet,” says Swank. ”You feel an enormous responsibility to get it right.”
