Maggie Gyllenhaal to star in Victorian-era vibrator rom-com

Maggie-GyllenhaalImage Credit: Janet Mayer/PR PhotosMaggie Gyllenhaal, never one to shy away from sexuality whether she’s doubled over on a desk in Secretary or breastfeeding in Away We Go, will star in Hysteria, an indie rom-com centering on the invention of the vibrator, Variety reports. Per the trade, she’ll play the daughter of a doctor (Jonathan Pryce), who, along with his young colleague (Hugh Dancy) is treating cases of female hysteria in Victorian London. Dancy and his best friend (Rupert Everett) experiment with a new electrical device to treat the, let’s call it irritability, that in those days, some medical practitioners cured with a manual pelvic massage.

I’m loving everything about this: From the quips I expect to hear Everett utter, to the clever ways the trailer will allude to what’s really going on in this movie, to the questions I anticipate Gyllenhaal being asked on her pre-release media tour (you know we journalists love to know how actors relate to their roles in real life). What about you? Can’t you see Pryce and Dancy being a bit embarrassed and Gyllenhaal being totally empowered?
