Kanye West's song for Taylor Swift: What would it sound like?

Ortega/PR PhotosAmong all the apologies, explanations, and reflections that Kanye West shared via Twitter over Labor Day weekend lurked one tantalizing tidbit of news. “I wrote a song for Taylor Swift that’s so beautiful and I want her to have it,” West wrote on Saturday morning. “If she won’t take it then I’ll perform it for her.” A West-penned Swift track would be a remarkable event for a whole slew of reasons. But what would it sound like? With only West’s “so beautiful” description to go on, it’s up to us to fill in the blanks.

Any song West wrote for Swift would presumably feature a big, catchy hook – the kind found all over 2008’s 808s & Heartbreak (think “Heartless”), not to mention earlier jams like “Spaceship” and “Never Let Me Down.” None of those songs quite fit with Swift’s typical style, but West’s tweeted proclamation that “I LOVE COUNTRY MUSIC” suggests he’d happily incorporate a little Nashville twang into this hypothetical composition. As for the honest emotionality that is a hallmark of Swift’s usual lyrics, he’s got that in the bag. Consider the way he laid his feelings out on 2007’s “Big Brother” (about his relationship with Jay-Z) or 2005’s “Hey Mama.” Not so many universes away from “Forever & Always,” is it?

Of course, there’s a big difference between Kanye writing heartfelt pop songs from his own perspective and Kanye doing the same from Swift’s. And the fact that Swift generally prefers writing her own material these days might pose a problem. All the same, I think this collaboration could be just crazy enough to work.

What about you? What do you think a Kanye West-Taylor Swift song would sound like? Speculate away in the comments!
