Stephen Colbert being courted for Restoring Truthiness rally

Stephen-Colbert

Stephen-ColbertIs Stephen Colbert brave enough to stand in the same spot where Glenn Beck spoke about American freedom just over one week ago? Well, not the same spot, but a few steps lower? That’s what some 32,000 Facebook users are aiming to do with a new grassroots campaign to get the Colbert Report host to emcee a “Restoring Truthiness” rally, designed as a counterpoint to Glenn Beck’s Aug. 28 “Restoring Honor” rally.

The whole thing started with a post on social news site Reddit and has expanded to include a Facebook page and web site touting Oct. 10, 2010 as the target date and the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C., where Beck’s rally took place, as the chosen venue. The idea is to fundraise and sell merchandise to cover costs, and donate the remaining money to a charity of Colbert’s choice, or one chosen by vote.

Colbert hasn’t responded to the effort yet, but Zachary Pruckowski, a 23-year-old recent graduate of UVA and one of the people who got the ball rolling on the campaign, said Colbert’s staff has been on the receiving end of more than a few emails and is following the campaign online, which shouldn’t be hard considering “restoring truthiness” topped Google Trends for a while today – the result of a concerted effort by supporters dubbed “Operation Strike of Truthiness”.

“The ideal situation would be for Colbert and Comedy Central to run the rally for their own promotional purposes,” he said via email. “Trying to organize an event before it gets too cold in D.C. would be challenging with this late of a start [Beck started planning his rally nearly a year ago] without the backing of a large group like Comedy Central, but it’s not impossible.”

For now, the Pruckowski and the rest of the team is hoping to boost the current number of Facebook members from just over 32,000 to 100,000 and bombard the Colbert Report’s exec producers with pleas emails.

Do you guys think Colbert would jump on board? What is your dream scenario for a Truthiness rally?

UPDATE: On last night’s Report, Colbert acknowledged the campaign, asked a grey goose, and a glass of Grey Goose, whether he should agree to host the rally, then announced that he will be making an important announcement, should Jon Stewart make an important announcement before…oh just watch the clip:
