Hereafter

Clint Eastwood tells a ghost story

(Ken Regan)

STARRING Matt Damon, Bryce Dallas Howard, Jay Mohr
WRITTEN BY Peter Morgan
DIRECTED BY Clint Eastwood

Clint Eastwood is known for a lot of things, but getting in touch with his feminine side isn’t one of them. Until now. ”I like to think of it as a chick flick,” he says of Hereafter, his latest directorial effort. ”But one that men will like too. Or at least one that won’t make them want to stick a Swiss Army knife into their leg.” The film follows three separate plotlines grappling with mortality. Matt Damon plays a reluctant psychic in San Francisco whose ability to communicate with the dead keeps ruining his relationships (like the one he tries to start up with Bryce Dallas Howard); French actress Cécile de France plays a Paris anchorwoman who nearly died in the Indian Ocean tsunami of 2004; and Frankie and George McLaren are twin first-time actors playing English lads around the time of the London subway bombings of 2005. All of the stories — crafted by Peter Morgan, an Oscar nominee for both The Queen and Frost/Nixon — somehow intersect at the end. ”It’s about people dealing with tragedy in different ways,” Eastwood goes on. ”But it’s also got this hope thing going for it, too. It’s tough to explain. You sort of have to see it.”
