'Top Gun 2': Screenwriter Christopher McQuarrie approached

Christopher McQuarrie, Oscar-winning screenwriter of The Usual Suspects, has been approached to pen a sequel to the 1986 Tom Cruise blockbuster Top Gun, a rep for the writer confirms to EW.com, though no deal is in place. (The news was first reported by New York Magazine.) Paramount Pictures hasn’t yet confirmed that it is making a Top Gun sequel.

A source with knowledge of the situation tells EW that Cruise’s 1980s flyboy character Maverick would likely be the main character in any script McQuarrie writes for a sequel.  McQuarrie’s rep would not comment on that claim.
