In his famous travel books, including In Patagonia and The Songlines, British journalist Bruce Chatwin was a beguiling storyteller with a seductive literary style who created an attractively elusive, adventurous character named ”Bruce Chatwin.” The selected, edited, annotated letters of Under the Sun still keep plenty hidden. But they go a long way toward revealing the complicated man who charmed and confounded, reported and embellished, and blurred the contours of his sexuality: Married but rarely at home with his wife, he died in 1989 at the age of 48 of the AIDS he publicly denied.
