Jeff Probst on episode 8 of 'Survivor: Redemption Island'

Each week, Survivor host Jeff Probst answers a few questions about the most recent episode of Redemption Island.

Okay, Jeff, put yourself in Matt’s shoes. Ometepe voted you off early but now you’ve made it back in the game and the other tribe is trying to bring you over to their side. What do you do in that position?
I think I would have made the same choice as Matt. Zapatera just didn’t seem the right way to go. The lesson I learned in watching Matt is sometimes sharing your inner monologue is a really bad idea. The truth is Rob wanted him gone either way, but Matt made it easy by sharing that he considered betraying Rob. Rob used that against him in convincing the tribe to get rid of him.

Now put yourself in Mike’s shoes. You’re down in numbers and you know getting Matt to flip is the key. What would you have done — besides promising to take him the end —to get Matt to join your side?  You’re desperate! What else do you have up your sleeve, Probst?
I have no extra ideas up my sleeve because generally speaking I think Mike did everything right. He laid it out really well. He reminded Matt that Matt had no shot with Ometepe. He then anticipated the argument Matt would have against joining Zapatera and he offered to sabotage his own alliance and make a new final four alliance with Matt and Andrea. The only thing I would have done differently involves tone. The way you communicate the idea to Matt. I didn’t feel the passion in Mike’s plea. But hey, that’s just me. Mike is a very smart strategist. It was time for a big move and he went for it.

Last week featured a very complex immunity challenge obstacle course while this week’s was a simple endurance-balancing contest. Both types of challenges are exciting in their own way. Which type do you prefer and why?
I prefer the ones that are well executed! Both challenges are vintage Survivor, and we need a balance of physical, mental and endurance to keep the game fair for all levels of players. But if we don’t execute a challenge properly and we don’t get great moments, then no matter how good they look on paper, they will suck. Fortunately, that was not the case with the two you mentioned!

Give us a sneak peak at what we can look forward to next week!
Next week is one of my favorite dilemmas: Immunity or food? I’m always fascinated by the people who choose to pass up the opportunity for immunity simply so they can have a slice of pizza or a cheeseburger. But we’ve never done this challenge without somebody taking the food. Take a guess who is eating next week?
