Last night, soul-rock icon Prince, shimmering in a gold sequined outfit and ever-high heels, made a rare TV appearance on Lopez Tonight to kick off his 21-day residency in Los Angeles.

Prince and his New Power Generation, along with longtime drummer Sheila E, performed “Laydown” from last year’s 20Ten album, introducing the audience to “that purple bounce.”

Check out his genre-defying blend of rock, hip-hop, funk, and even a little gospel after the jump.

The Los Angeles Times reports that almost 2,500 people requested tickets for the taping. Many missed out on their shot to catch him live on Lopez for free, but if you’re in Cali and have $25 to spend (Okay, those are likely the nosebleed seats. But still.) on what might be one of the best nights of your life, you can buy tickets to his Welcome 2 America show here.

Plan on attending? Have you already been? Let us know.
