So... how many Oscars will 'Fast Five' take home?

Vin Diesel Vs The Rock

(Jaimie Trueblood)

Fast Five is already the No. 1 movie of 2011, earning more than $139 million after only 10 days of release, but could it actually be in the Oscar mix at the end of the year? The franchise’s star Vin Diesel thinks so. In the Los Angeles Times’ analysis of the films’ blue-collar appeal to multi-cultural audiences, Diesel said, “I wouldn’t be surprised if there is some Oscar talk around this. I don’t know, maybe I’m just biting off what some guy from Channel 7 thought,” he said with a chuckle. “But sooner or later, people are gonna say, ‘Wait a minute, just because they are for the working class doesn’t mean they’re not great.’”

Very clever, Mr. Diesel: Pawning off your Oscar proclamation on “some guy from Channel 7.” In general, critics have been very kind towards Fast Five, with EW’s Owen Gleiberman calling it “high-octane trash, but you will go, ‘Ohhhhhh” – that qualifies as a rave. Still, the Oscar-talk might be a tad premature, even with 10 slots available for Best Picture. Of course, maybe Diesel was referring to some of the lesser categories, like Sound Mixing and Visual Effects. Or, maybe this really is the first step in a grassroots lobbying effort to get Diesel his elusive Oscar. What aspects of Fast Five do you think deserve to be recognized by Oscar? Vote below.
