Sony lands Osama bin Laden film by 'Hurt Locker' director Kathryn Bigelow

Sony’s Columbia Pictures has picked up the domestic distribution rights to Kathryn Bigelow’s next film, which follows the black ops mission that culminated in Osama bin Laden’s death, according to a studio press release. Bigelow, who in 2010 became the first female filmmaker to win a Best Director Oscar for helming The Hurt Locker, has been developing the untitled movie since 2008 with her Locker screenwriter Mark Boal. The duo plans to incorporate the recent raid on bin Laden’s Pakistani compound into the film, which is scheduled to be released in late 2012. Production on the film is slated to begin this summer.
