X-Men: First Class takes a daring plunge into the deeper recesses of comic book mythology, with a supporting cast of somewhat beloved characters who are decisively not Wolverine. Will John Q. Everyman be interested in a mutant gang composed entirely of secondary characters? We’ll find out when the movie opens next week, but in the meantime, you can bask in a just-released clip featuring a mutant superpower training montage. Havok — who was Cyclops’ brother in the comic books — fires some red plasma energy out of his chest. Banshee shrieks his supersonic boom, sounding remarkably like Axl Rose circa 1987. The clip also features a slight plot tease — Young Magneto says “Shaw has his army, we need ours,” a reference to Kevin Bacon’s Sebastian Shaw. Still unexplained: How JFK factors into all this.
