FBI nabs James 'Whitey' Bulger, inspiration for Jack Nicholson's 'Departed' mobster

Boss-ted! After 16 years on the lam, infamous Boston gangster James “Whitey” Bulger, who inspired Jack Nicholson’s character Frank Costello in The Departed, was finally tracked down by the FBI.

After being tipped off by a viewer of a recent television spot, agents found the 81-year-old in a beachside home in Santa Monica, Calif., yesterday and arrested him without incident. Bulger has the dubious distinction of being on the Bureau’s Ten Most Wanted list.

The made man and former informant is set to appear in court today, where he’ll go up against 19 counts of of murder, as well as conspiracy to commit murder, narcotics distribution, extortion, and money laundering.

Bulger’s girlfriend, 60-year-old Catherine Greig, was also arrested for harboring a fugitive.
