The spawn of 'Jaws'

Examining the super-shark's heirs apparent

When it chomped its way onto the big screen on June 20, 1975, Steven Spielberg’s Jaws made moviegoers’ blood run cold and set the box office ablaze. Naturally, it didn’t take long for the great white thriller to give rise to an animal kingdom of carnivorous copycats. We examine some of the cinematic beasts Jaws wrought.

By Land
Grizzly (1976)
Just when you thought it was safe to pitch a tent and toast s’mores…it’s Jaws with claws!

Kingdom of the Spiders (1977)
William Shatner hams it up mightily versus tarantulas!

Cujo (1983)
Terror doesn’t get more slobbery than this rabid Stephen King adaptation. It’s Jaws with paws!

By Sea
Orca (1977)
This toothless Jaws wannabe stars odd duo Richard Harris and Bo Derek. It isn’t a 10.

Piranha (1978)
It’s lots of little Jawses! Director Joe Dante skimped on the budget, but not on the gore.

Anaconda (1997)
Jennifer Lopez, Ice Cube & Co. line up to become an Amazonian serpent’s smorgasbord. Burp!

Lake Placid (1999)
Something evil lurks in a quaint, quiet Maine lake, and it’s being fed by…Betty White?!?

Deep Blue Sea (1999)
A mostly so-so film with one of the best shark attacks ever. Thank you, Samuel L. Jackson.
