'Sons of Anarchy': Season 4 will be badass, and not just because of guest star Danny Trejo

FX’s Sons of Anarchy returns with its 90-minute season 4 premiere on Sept. 6, and if the new promo featuring Machete’s Danny Trejo doesn’t get you revved up, we don’t know what will. Watch it below.

After 14 months in the slammer, our favorite gun-running motorcycle club is reunited on the outside. Jax (Charlie Hunnam) emerges with a deeper commitment to his family with Tara (Maggie Siff), while Clay (Ron Perlman) – struggling even more with the chronic arthritis in his hands – feels like his time as leader is running out. (If you can’t ride, you’re out of the MC.) Both want to bank big money. “What it does to Clay’s outlook on the club’s ability to become independent so that they’re not beholden to anybody or anything is rather ruthless,” Perlman tells EW. “There’s an insanity to it almost in terms of its urgency.” He’ll make a business decision that divides the club and paves the way for Trejo and The Shield’s Benito Martinez to recur as new allies starting in episode 2 – SAMCRO will supply guns to a Mexican drug cartel and mule cocaine.

The Perlman-Trejo pairing is definitely one to look forward to. After watching one of their scenes together, SOA creator Kurt Sutter told EW, “It’s like these two battle-weary generals talking about the fates of their soldiers, and both of them played it with this great gravitas. As well as being badass, Danny just brings weight to everything he does.”

As you can tell from the promo, this season is emotionally intense and action-packed. ”Usually, we have a couple of resting episodes,” Perlman says. “But it never stops. It just keeps on goin’. I read these scripts, and I’m goin’, ‘Holy s—, really? Really?’”

Expect some glorious violence, even if Sutter says poetically, “I’ve learned a little goes a long way. You can’t be cutting the balls off a clown every episode. I try to parcel it up in reasonable doses so people aren’t running screaming from their sofas.” You will definitely rewind the final moments of the season premiere. In episode 3, Sutter teases, “There’s a scene inspired by every bad cowboys and Indians movie I saw as a kid.” And episode 4, well, that’s a big road trip to Arizona, and “there’s a lot of s— blown up,” he promises.
