A few weeks ago, PopWatch started an official petition to get Melissa McCarthy to co-host the 2012 Emmys alongside Amy Poehler after they stole the show with their ingenious Best Actress pageant bit and general wonderfulness. But it seems many of you want McCarthy to tackle a different high-profile gig first.
As it turns out, the Bridesmaids star was a big draw in her SNL debut over the weekend, delivering some impressive numbers. The show, which also welcomed fellow SNL first-timers Lady Antebellum, averaged a 5.2 rating/13 share in the metered-market households. While those aren’t exactly Betty White numbers, McCarthy pulled in more than last week’s season premiere (5.1 rating/13 share), which featured Alec Baldwin’s record-breaking 16th appearance as host.
Plenty of viewers, myself included, were impressed by McCarthy’s no-holds-barred approach to hosting. In fact, some of you in the EW.com comments section (don’t worry, not this “Comments Section”) suggested that the Mike & Molly actress should literally quit her day job and become a full-time SNL cast member. While that probably won’t happen any time soon (after all, she did just win an Emmy for her work on the CBS sitcom) McCarthy has officially joined the list of celebrities we’d love to see as regulars on the sketch show.
In addition to Baldwin and White, the exclusive club includes fellow ace hosts like Justin Timberlake, Christopher Walken, Tom Hanks, Emma Stone, Anne Hathaway, Jon Hamm, Steve Carell and Steve Martin. But is McCarthy now your ultimate dream SNL cast member (Hidden Valley Ranch enthusiast Linda or her gleefully demented Lawrence Welk Show sister, pictured above, could easily be recurring characters)? Where does she now rank on your list of must-return SNL guests? Did you tune in live or did you catch the episode Sunday after hearing all the buzz? Share in the comments section below.
