No pressure on Ben Stiller, but there are some awfully high expectations going into tonight’s Saturday Night Live, which he’ll be hosting for just the second time in his career. Not only is he entering into a season that is two-for-two with stellar hosts (first with record-breaker Alec Baldwin and then with first-timer Melissa McCarthy), but there’s also been talk that his Tower Heist co-star Eddie Murphy could stop by Studio 8H. It would be the first time in nearly 27 years that the former SNL superstar would be making an appearance on the show. Like we said, no pressure.
Of course, if Murphy does swing by to revive Buckwheat or take us on another adventure through “Mr. Robinson’s Neighborhood,” it won’t be the only long-overdue SNL reunion: Stiller himself was also a cast member, albeit a very short-lived one. (He appeared in just a handful of episodes during the 1989 season.) So while Stiller doesn’t have the same catalog of classic SNL characters as Murphy, the actor could just as easily break out one of his well-known movie characters like Zoolander or Tugg Speedman. Then again, Stiller works just as well, if not better, as the straight man. So should he dive back into his sketch comedy roots full-on (see: The Ben Stiller Show) or play second banana to current cast members like Taran Killam or Jay Pharoah? (Is anyone else hoping for a possible Eddie Murphy and Jay Pharoah-as-Eddie-Murphy face-off?)
