The list of AMA performers keeps growing. The American Music Awards announced today that Christina Aguilera, Justin Bieber, Mary J. Blige, Kelly Clarkson and Maroon 5 will be performing at this year’s ceremony, airing November 20th on ABC.
It’s no secret that on one watches for the actual awards – fan-voting means predictable, Bieber-fevered results. But the AMAs do attract top-tier performers, and this year is no exception. I can’t wait to see the inevitable Christina Aguilera/Maroon 5 “Moves like Jagger” duet. I just hope FoxNews doesn’t show a clip of the performance…right, Adam?
It’s also a safe bet that viewers will be treated to a Justin Bieber Christmas song (fingers crossed for a Mariah Carey surprise guest appearance!) as well as previously-announced Katy Perry performing her new single.
I’m sure Perry is hoping a live performance will give her the edge over other Artist of the Year noms Adele, Lady Gaga, and Taylor Swift (and Lil’ Wayne, but let’s get real. He doesn’t stand a chance.) On second thought, great performance or not, Perry won’t upset. Lady Gaga’s little Monsters are going to be voting until their fingers break off.
I’m most excited that Kelly Clarkson is back. The lady sounds great live, and if she’s smart she’ll perform her potential next single, power anthem “What Doesn’t Kill You (Stronger)”. I can’t wait to see her belt that one for a giant, screaming crowd. Watch your back, Aguilera.
And as long as we’re dreaming, I’m hopeful pregnant Beyoncé (who is nominated, but isn’t scheduled to appear) gives a surprise performance of “Countdown.” The fact that we haven’t gotten a live showing after that phenomenal, addicting video is a travesty. She’s got an album to promote too, after all.
