Seeing as Nicki Minaj and Katy Perry have already technically modeled their entire makeup, hair, and wardrobe after Barbie (though, in all fairness, Barbie has never had to worry about a nip slip), it seemed only fitting that Mattel would transform the singers into their iconic dolls.
And they can be all yours for the low, low starting bid price of… $1,000. Starting on Friday, CharityBuzz.com began to auction off the dolls, including Minaj’s plastic likeness named, perfectly enough, Minajesty Barbie, which boasts that the 11-½ inch replica of the colorful “Super Bass” singer has every part of her down pat, from her pink hair (jeez, bangs are everywhere today), right down to the tattoo she has on her left arm. I’m no Barbie expert (Malibu Stacy, on the other hand… ) but is this the first Barbie with a tattoo? And I don’t mean like ones you gave your Barbie yourself, which, much like those homemade haircuts you gave her, likely ended in tears. Or is Minajesty just one of the very few tatted Barbies? Help me out, PopWatchers!
Of course, it’s not the lifelike bling or the Barbie-sized replica of the dress she wore on the Pink Friday album that will make Minaj or Barbie enthusiasts open their wallets. Rather, it’s the proceeds from the doll, which will go directly to the Project Angel Food charity. The nonprofit organization provides meals to those affected by HIV/AIDS, cancer, and other life-threatening illnesses. (Some celebrities rap for their causes, others become Barbie dolls. Hey, it’s all in the name of good deeds, right?) The sale of the Perry doll, who looks like she came straight out of the “California Gurls” video (her stage is made of a waffle cone!) and has fishnet stockings made of Swarovski crystals, will also benefit that same charity. The Nicki Minaj and Katy Perry dolls go off of the auction block on Monday, Dec. 19, but you’d might as well re-adjust your Christmas wish list now, as they won’t be sold in stores.
So while you probably won’t get to add Nicki Minaj or Katy Perry Barbie to your celebrity doll collection, who else would you like to see get the Barbie treatment? And no, stars who are already technically dolls come to life (Kim Kardashian, Courtney Stodden) don’t count. Instead, how about a Leslie Knope doll that comes with her very own podium or a hipster-friendly Zooey Deschanel? (Side note: How did they never make an actual Aqua Barbie doll? Who dropped the ball on that one?) And lest we forget Ken! There could be a whole dapper set that includes Jon Hamm Ken, Idris Elba Ken, George Clooney Ken, or Michael Fassbender Ken (junk-free, alas).
Tell us PopWatchers, which stars would you love to see get the doll treatment? What celebrity Barbies have you owned? (My first and only one was the Shannen Doherty 90210 Brenda doll, complete with khaki shorts and a perfectly ’90s purple vest.) Share in the comments section below!
