No, we’re not talking about Courtney Stodden, we’re talking about this year’s newcomers to the Twitterverse. Having passed its half-decade mark, the site continues to attract A-listers who have a little time and 140 characters to spare for an occasional rant or rave. So, which celebs got a taste of the dreaded #failwhale for the first time in 2011? Read on…

Jan. 28: James Cameron

He hasn’t tweeted since April 19. It was good while it lasted, then we struggled to remember exactly what was so exciting at the time. Kind of like Avatar.

Best tweet: “Arnold @Schwarzenegger and I were hanging out in the rainforest with my indigenous friends. They gave us both war clubs (watch yr ass).”

Feb. 3: Howard Stern

Unless you’re looking for links to his show or pics of his wife, Stern is a surprisingly boring tweeter. Better shape up before America’s Got Talent, curly!

Best tweet: “Could there be anything more degrading than the word hunk?’ -Rob lowe’s new book. Yeah must be horrible… Awful”

Feb. 5: Matt Drudge

Looks like the Drudge-ster is too busy running his site to tweet regularly. He goes nearly a month between tweets of late, but he proves immune to even the mighty Oprah.

Best tweet: “But this reporter did not cry, expected I would; Did for Johnny, MASH, other generational moments. She left the stage without saying why…”

March 1: Charlie Sheen

Hard to believe the hashtag master himself has been on Twitter less than a year. He tweets early and often, and he has taken #winning to the next level with more than 5.7 million followers.

Best tweet: “Face it folks, you just feel better when you say it. #WINNING”

March 22: Christina Aguilera

Pretty much exclusively a promotional tool for her job as a judge on The Voice. Sigh for the wasted potential.

Best tweet: “Happy 30th birthday @britneyspears!!!” [Ed. note: #FeelLikeImLivingATeenageDream]

March 28: Bronx Zoo’s Cobra

Remember her? This sassy invertebrate escaped her N.Y.C. enclosure for a full week before she was found still on Zoo grounds. But that’s not before she spawned a Twitter homage that, as of publishing, has more than 218,000 followers.

Best tweet: “Thinking about seeing ‘How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying.’ That Daniel Radcliffe really speaks to me. #snakeonthetown”

April 14: Billy Crystal and Nelson Mandela

Apparently something was in the air on that particularly Thursday. Crystal delivers predictable Yankees love and name-checks on everyone from Bette Midler to Tony Hawk and Steve Jobs. Mandela’s Twitter, primarily a mouthpiece for The Nelson Mandela Centre of Memory at the Nelson Mandela Foundation, provides more earnest, inspirational fare.

Best tweet, Crystal: “Am doing the Oscars so the young woman in the pharmacy will stop asking my name when I pick up my prescriptions. Looking forward to the show”

Best tweet, Mandela: “‘#Difficulties break some men but make others. No axe is sharp enough to cut the soul of a sinner who keeps on trying’ #NelsonMandela 1975”

May 27: Alec Baldwin

After a turbulent American Airlines experience, Baldwin deactivated his Twitter account on Dec. 5. Talk about a May-December romance! T.I.P. (Tweet in Peace), Mr. Baldwin.

Best tweet: “Flight attendant on American reamed me out 4 playing WORDS W FRIENDS while we sat at the gate, not moving. #nowonderamericaairisbankrupt.”

NEXT: The charge on the second half of the year was led by Gwyneth Paltrow, Ricky Gervais, Simon Cowell, and more
