Comedian Bill Maher sparked a Twitter war this week with a post he wrote skewering quarterback Tim Tebow and his fervent religious beliefs following the Denver Bronco’s Christmas Eve loss to the Buffalo Bills. “Wow, Jesus just f—d #TimTebow bad! And on Xmas Eve! Somewhere in hell Satan is tebowing, saying to Hitler “Hey, Buffalo’s killing them,” Maher tweeted.
Tebowing – getting down on one knee to pray in a crowd no matter what else is going on – has been an easy target for ridicule, sparking an Internet meme and becoming part of a Saturday Night Live sketch. Tebow was even immortalized in song by some creative ESPN editors.
Maher, who is vocal about being an atheist, sparked a huge response from his Twitter followers and outraged many conservatives, including Fox News’ Eric Bolling, who responded: “Bill Maher is disgusting vile trash. I can’t even repeat what he just tweeted about Tebow..on Christmas Eve. #straighttohellBill”
Tebow’s post about the game garnered more a positive reaction, with fans tweeting dozens of “Merry Christmas” messages to the football star. He didn’t respond to Maher, but posted: “Tough game today but what’s most important is being able to celebrate the birth of our Savior, Jesus Christ. Merry Christmas everyone GB².”
A search for Bill Maher on Twitter brings up calls for people to cancel their HBO subscriptions over the tweet (the network where his show Real Time with Bill Maher airs) and suggestions that he play the role of Scrooge in A Christmas Carol.
What say you, PopWatchers? Did Maher take the joke too far?
