The Shield and Chicago Code creator Shawn Ryan and Dead Like Me writer Karl Gajdusek have sold a rather cool idea to ABC.

The network has ordered a pilot called Last Resort. The logline: “An international action-thriller/soap that follows the story of establishing a new society in a world held hostage by the crew of a ballistic missile submarine.” Basically a U.S. nuclear sub crew refuse orders to fire their missiles and escape to a NATO outpost and declare themselves the smallest nuclear nation.

I know, “Oohhhhh,” right? What I like about this idea is that it’s a high-concept and very ambitious premise, but there’s also a lot of ways to pull traditional TV series week-to-week drama from it. Bond veteran Martin Campbell (Casino Royale) is in talks to direct.
