A sequel to Waiting to Exhale is still in development at Fox after the passing of star Whitney Houston, a rep for the studio confirms to EW. The 1995 hit, based on Terry McMillan’s best-selling novel, starred Houston, Angela Bassett, Loretta Devine, and Lela Rochon as a group of friends dealing with their various relationship issues. A sequel, adapted from McMillan’s follow-up Getting to Happy, has been in development at Fox since 2010 with Exhale director Forest Whitaker attached. “It’s almost in [Houston’s] honor that we think to soldier on,” Fox 2000 president Elizabeth Gabler told Vulture, which first reported the news. Gabler also said “it isn’t inconceivable” that Oprah Winfrey, a great supporter of Exhale, would take a part in the new film, which still has no finalized script or start date.

Houston’s final movie, the mother-daughter drama Sparkle, is slated for release in August.
