Wilco and British singer-songwriter Billy Bragg are set to release a third album of collaborations, Mermaid Avenue Volume III.
Bragg announced on his official website that the collection will feature 17 tracks culled from the same critically lauded sessions that produced 1998’s Mermaid Avenue and 2000’s Mermaid Avenue Vol. II.
The Mermaid Avenue project found Wilco and Bragg putting music to lyrics penned by legendary protest singer Woody Gurthrie. Both of the original Mermaid Avenue albums were nominated for Grammys and the first album contained the track “California Stars,” which would become a Wilco live favorite. The Mermaid Avenue sessions were also notable for featuring the Wilco lineup which included multi-instrumentalist Jay Bennett, who passed away in 2009.
Mermaid Avenue Volume III will be available as part of a 4-disc box set called Mermaid Avenue: The Complete Sessions which is being released to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Guthrie’s birth.
In addition to the new CD, the set will feature remastered versions of the first two collections and a 1999 documentary about the collaboration between Bragg and Wilco called Man in the Sand.
