Friends Like Us

Genre: Fiction; Author: Lauren Fox; Publisher: Knopf

Willa and Jane’s friendship and roomie-dom is in some ways more intimate than romance. But just as the BFFs reach the part of their 20s when it becomes less and less acceptable to dawdle at part-time jobs, eat bagels for dinner, and live with your best friend, Willa’s dear high school buddy Ben reenters her life and promptly falls hard for Jane, leaving Willa in the role of alternately good-natured and seething third wheel. Friends Like Us is occasionally a bit too slice-of-life — the trio loaf through many an eventless Milwaukee afternoon — but it’s also a funny, astute examination of the fragility of friendship. B+
