We’re still many new moons away from the Nov. 16 premiere date of Breaking Dawn’s second and final installment, but Stephenie Meyer fans are covered today as the first trailer for Meyer’s not-Twilight novel The Host is upon us. It’s… well… eye-popping, to say the least. Check it out below.

From this 80-second clip alone, it would appear The Host has benefited from a bigger budget than its vampy forebear. It was a good idea to keep the visuals simple, to contrast the high-stakes, high-concept plot (there is intergalactic body snatching, alien colonization, and a tortured love affair, for starters). The earth-to-eye effect is particularly cool, not to mention the flashes of the Earthlings who’ve been possessed and their eerily glinting peepers – baby blues that I will probably see in my sleep tonight.
Quite rightly at the end of it all is the brilliant Saoirse Ronan, who takes a dual role as both the resistant human Melanie and the interloping alien soul (the Wanderer) Melanie is fighting for control. If anyone can pull off Meyer’s melodramatic sci-fi lite, it’s Ronan. Then again, her castmates Diane Kruger, William Hurt, and Max Irons don’t hurt the cause.
The Host arrives in theaters March 29, 2013. What do you say, movie fans? Did you read the book. Is the trailer better, worse, or the same as you imagined? Do you think The Host will make for a suitable follow-up to Twilight?
