The Vampire Diaries star Paul Wesley was a guest on Live! with Kelly this morning, and he asked Ripa’s cohost, D.L. Hughley, if he remembered him. He didn’t. Wesley said he had “three phenomenal words” that might help: “Burt Reynolds volleyball.” That did it! They costarred in the 2006 film Cloud 9, which, judging from the trailer embedded below, was about Burt Reynolds turning strippers into beach volleyball players. “We were up for Best Picture,” joked Wesley, who appears to have played the ladies’ frequently shirtless trainer.
Both Hughley and Wesley recalled Reynolds' generosity: He gifted Hughley, who played his son in the film, an expensive bottle of wine, and invited Wesley to his home for dinner to listen to acting legends swap stories. Wesley said he himself had nothing to share, but as Ripa notes, that's just because he hadn't been on a plane that was hit by lightning yet. As Wesley's Twitter followers know, he and his wife, Torrey DeVitto, were on their way to Toronto for the Wizard World Comic Con last Friday when their plane was hit by lightning. What Wesley revealed on Live! was that he turned around to look at other passengers' panicked faces and saw Joan Rivers seated behind him. (Fringe's Joshua Jackson was on a plane to Vancouver on Friday the 13th that was also struck by lightning. No word on which celebrity he might've had to share headlines with.)
Watch Wesley's entertaining Live! interview, which includes a clip from this Thursday's TVD ep, below. Note: We're pretending we didn't hear him say he wants to shoot fewer shirtless scenes on The Vampire Diaries because the long shoot days leave him no time to work out.
