'The Impossible': Check out the eye-popping trailer for tsunami disaster film

Director Juan Antonio Bayona earned some good notices a few years ago for his Spanish horror film The Orphanage, but his next movie could turn him from a cult figure into a household name. (At least in cool households.) In The Impossible, Ewan McGregor and Naomi Watts play happy parents on a happy vacation with their happy children in Thailand. Sounds pretty happy, right? Mother Nature has other ideas.

The Impossible is based on the true story of a family caught in the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, and a new trailer for the movie evokes a frightening sense of paradise suddenly beset by the apocalypse. In the words of EW editor Jeff Labrecque: “Take that, new-agey Clint Eastwood/Matt Damon tidal wave movie!” Watch the video – it’s in Spanish, but believe me, you’ll get the gist:
