Did a mad scientist send pop culture back to 2006? It feels that way, with Lindsay Lohan and Rosie O’Donnell garnering so many headlines lately. This morning, the former Queen of Nice paid another visit to the Today show, and though O’Donnell was there to serve on a “Professionals” panel, she also defended comments she made about Lohan on Tuesday.
To recap: Two days ago, O’Donnell told Matt Lauer she thinks Lohan needs “a lot of help.” More specifically, she continued, “She’s had a lot of trouble doing every single movie, including SNL. I think she’s not in a place to work.”
O’Donnell says she was surprised by the way the blogosphere reacted to her comments. Even so, she’s standing by her harsh words – “We’ve all seen what’s happened [to Lohan] in the last decade,” O’Donnell told Lauer today. “Because it’s tragic.”
What’s more, O’Donnell believes the industry has an obligation to help Lohan. She explained her position by invoking another fallen star: Whitney Houston.
In case you can't watch the video, here's O'Donnell's full Houston digression: "Watching Whitney Houston's funeral, I remember thinking, 'Why didn't more people say what they knew?' We all knew. When she would not show up to do this show, not show up to my show. We watched Being Bobby Brown. It was like watching Sid and Nancy. They were people in the throes of addiction. But all anyone cared about was that the show was getting ratings, not that this woman, this talented individual, this human being, this mother, this daughter, was worth saving and pulling out of the money market industry. And I know only someone can be in control of their own sobriety, but to look at Lindsay Lohan you can’t help but feel for her. And I do not think she’s untalented – I think she’s quite talented.”
Do you think this comparison is fair, PopWatchers? Does it sound like O’Donnell has Lilo’s best interests at heart? And – if you watched the video – what do you make of the former talk show host’s harsh assessment of original Parent Trap star Hayley Mills?
