George 'Goober' Lindsey, star of 'Andy Griffith,' dies

Actor George Lindsey, best known for playing Gomer Pyle’s cousin Goober on The Andy Griffith Show, died Sunday morning at a hospital in Nashville. He was 83 years old.

In a statement, Griffith said, “George Lindsey was my friend. I had great respect for his talent and his human spirit.”

Lindsey grew up in Alabama and had an extensive stage and television career that included a long run on Hee Haw as well as guest spots on M*A*S*H, Gunsmoke, CHIPs, and The Twilight Zone.
