Reviews of the latest songs from Rihanna, Passion Pit, and more

Rihanna, ”Where Have You Been”

The pop star’s pounding latest is a song the same way an assault tank is an automobile; it’s a mindless dance enforcer with weaponized synth hooks and just enough fake pathos (honestly, what guy is really hiding from Rihanna?) to pull you into its sights. A-Adam Markovitz

Colbie Caillat Feat. Common, ”Favorite Song”

Working its way down the generic-summer-jam checklist — tropical melody, drum-circle beat, rap interlude, a few la-la-las — the most recent single from the “Brighter Than the Sun” songstress and the rapper-actor is nice enough. But with its relentlessly vague pleasantness (“I wanna be your favorite song/You can turn it up, play me all night long”), it’s unlikely to become anyone’s favorite anything. B-Melissa Maerz

Lady Antebellum, ”Wanted You More”

“I guess I wanted you more,” the Nashville trio muse wistfully on this disappointingly plodding bore, which falls prey to the same post–“Need You Now” blandness that has plagued the group’s preceding Own the Night singles. I guess I wanted upbeat Lady A more. C+Grady Smith

Passion Pit, ”Take a Walk”

The Cambridge, Mass., electro-rockers have a remedy for today’s tough times: Walk it off! Judging by the song’s sunny synths and thumping, festival-ready beat, they also want us to dance it out. If only solving the budget crisis were so easy. B+Ray Rahman
